Experiences with species

This was one of the experiences of a lifetime. We're straining our eyes desperate to lock onto a Barau's Petrel, as we hadn't seen one in 2018. I spot this bird in the distance, light undersides, dark uppersides, flipping in and out of the waves... BARAU'S!!! I shout... HANG ON, ATLANTIC PETREL!! NO!!! SOMETHING ELSE, TAKE PHOTOS!!!!! We did, and checked them against the book - remembering a paper Gary Allport had sent me about probable Tahiti Petrel in the Mozambique channel, that's the first place I looked. Sure enough, there we had it, Southern Africa's first confirmed record of a Tahiti Petrel. Celebration time! We had some first time pelagic goers as well, I'm not sure that they know how lucky they were.
