Black Kite Milvus migrans (126)
IUCN Red list status: Least concern

Experiences with species

My opinion is that there are far less sightings of this Kite in Southern Africa than we believe - immature Yellow-billed Kites also display a black bill, and are therefore often confused with Black Kites. The adult has a very pale head. The bird seen in Namibia is an interesting specimen, as it displays pale bases to the primaries, as well as a paler vent and belly. These Kites are found in Russia, from the Ural Mountains and East all the way to China, and is a very uncommon occurrence in Africa, let alone Southern Africa. (Thanks to Dick Forsman for the detailed information on this species.)
