Experiences with species

Having dipped on this Snake Eagle in Caprivi, where it was one of my main targets, I was highly upset when others in our group came back from a drive saying they had just seen one near the Coutadas. Way out of range! They showed me a photo, and it turned out to be an African Harrier-Hawk. Not so upset, but it was still on my list of outstanding lifers. A few days later, we had just "climbed" Mt. Gorongosa, seen the Oriole, and then bought a few lekker cold 2M beers at Gorongosa village and were heading back to camp. "RAPTOR!!" I shouted, we screeched to a halt and jumped out - a small Eagle, probably Snake- Eagle, probably Southern Banded Snake-Eagle - having checked the books a few days before, I knew what to look for. The shout went up "WESTERN BANDED SNAKE!!". Just as much out of range, if not more so than the other sighting would have been.

My second sighting was at a lunch stop next to the Zambezi River - Jono heard the bird call, and the two of us ran towards the call, to see a bird flying off. There were a pair of them that seemed to have found a good spot for snakes and were content to stay around the area while we enjoyed our post sighting lunch.
