Experiences with species As number 801 on my Southern African lifelist, it is obvious that this bird had been avoiding me. In spite of quite a few visits to WCNP, where Curlew is "guaranteed" at Geelbek in the Summer months, a combination of crap weather and badly timed visits from a tide perspective had seen me missing out on this bird. As a brilliant follow up, literally minutes after seeing a Black-headed Gull, two Curlews where located foraging in the rapidly disappearing mudflats outside the hide. A recent odd sighting was a Curlew at Nata Sanctuary, on the edge of Makgadagadi Salt Pans in Botswana. Other names: Curlew |
