Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata (289)
(Grootwulp)
Experiences with species

As number 801 on my Southern African lifelist, it is obvious that this bird had been avoiding me. In spite of quite a few visits to WCNP, where Curlew is "guaranteed" at Geelbek in the Summer months, a combination of crap weather and badly timed visits from a tide perspective had seen me missing out on this bird. As a brilliant follow up, literally minutes after seeing a Black-headed Gull, two Curlews where located foraging in the rapidly disappearing mudflats outside the hide. A recent odd sighting was a Curlew at Nata Sanctuary, on the edge of Makgadagadi Salt Pans in Botswana.
