Crab Plover Dromas ardeola (296)
IUCN Red list status: Least concern
Experiences with species

I had previously seen a Crab Plover at Southern Sanctuary in Richard's Bay, where distant scope views and slightly closer binocular views were had of an adult bird. Daryll Dell and co from Phinda reported seeing one at the St. Lucia estuary on Birding Big Day in 2009, so a month later we were in the vicinity, so I decided to check out the area. The St. Lucia estuary was over-run with holidaymakers, fishing etc, so I didn't think there was much chance there. We walked down to the Umfolozi River, the wind was howling and sandblasting our legs, but on getting there, we saw hundreds if not thousands of Terns, and some determined scanning of the far bank eventually found this guy. He moved close to a group of Pied Avocets, something about their plumage must have attracted him to them, but I don't know what he thought of their strange beaks! The group of 20 at Ponta da Barra let me eventually get some decent shots of them.
