Experiences with species
Late on the afternoon of 25th August, 2008, I received an email on the birdnet from Martin Rudman,
saying he'd seen this Gull on Leeuwpan and it had been present most of the day. Of course I was on the phone straight away, to Hanno and Ian - Hanno as chance
had it was coming to Jo'burg that evening. I arranged to pick him up at 07h00 the next morning at the garage. We hightailed it through traffic out to Leandra,
Leeuwpan being +-150km from home. As we got there, Clive flicked his headlights and indicated the bird was on our right - off the bike, up with the binoculars
and there it was. As I got my camera focused, it took off. A lifer for the 8 of us there!
That Saturday I went out again with Allan Ridley - the Gull was in almost the same place, and did almost exactly the same thing - took off as we got out of the
car! Some poor shots taken as evidence...
On a "twitch" to see the Bridled Tern, having some extra days handy, I headed with Stefan to East London, where the long staying Gulls were being repeatedly seen
and photographed. We located the Gull within minutes of arrival, and took quite a few decent photos. Far better than 2008!
