Bridled Tern Onychoprion anaethetus (333)
(Brilsterretjie)
Experiences with species

This bird has been visiting our shores since 2001. I went down to try and see it when it arrived in 2009, to sit on the beach for 2 days without any luck. When it arrived in 2010, I decided this was it. I booked a ticket and planned to stay in Port Elizabeth for five days, to give myself a "proper" chance at the bird. In the end, I had to wait just over 3 hours before it appeared out of nowhere and proceeded to preen itself and pose beautifully for several hundred photos! It was with me for over an hour and a half before heading off out to sea, tired of the attention that the Kelp Gulls were giving to it and the other terns. It was seen again over the next few days, some people having the luck of seeing it within minutes of arrival at the beach. I was lucky enough to have it calling as well!
