Southern White-faced Scops-Owl Ptilopsis granti (397)
(Witwanguil)
Experiences with species

I first saw this Owl in the '80's when I went on a wilderness trail in Kruger Park. Bruce, our ranger, was interested in all the raptors in his area and had mapped their nests. He took us to a known White-faced Owl nest, and there it sat staring at us with those orange eyes. I had rubbish pictures from 2006, but I got a far better one while I was holding a spotlight in one hand and the camera in the other in 2008!

In 2011, in my run to a big year total, this little bugger gave me the run around. Two of them calling at Nata, but with a low powered torch I had no chance of finding them. Since that I have hunted. And hunted! On the 28.12.2011 I finally nailed him for the year list, #825.
