Experiences with species Vilancoulos is THE place to find this Bee-eater. We knew this and also knew that Etienne Marais and his group did not see them a few weeks earlier. They did however have a nasty cellphone grabbing incident in Vilancoulos. Wary of that, we drove into the town, the streets were busy, lots of pedestrians. We saw a Bee-eater fly over us and pulled off the road, and quickly got out. It was indeed our target, I quickly locked up the car and then got onto the task of trying to get decent photos of the bird. Quite happily, we headed off South to Blue Waters and had a celebratory beer (or 2!). Following this first report, we visited Namibia, where a distinctly divided distribution and different race of this Bee-eater is found. They became more and more common as we got closer to the Angolan border. Other names: Madagascar Bee-eater |
