Experiences with species This has not proven an easy bird to see. The first one we saw was on the main Rundu road, near Shamvura. My wife Debbie said "there's another Roller" - we all assumed Lilac-breasted, again...We stopped to look and there it sat, a Racket-tailed right next to the road, in the open, near some huts. These birds normally sit in the middle of trees, making them difficult to spot. The second time I saw one was in Mozambique - we had driven past them, when Ben du Toit radioed us to call us back. This particular bird (the top photo) looked like it had just been attacked - the right eye was closed and all the feathers on the back were ruffled. There were 3 Shikra's noisily flying around the area, one of them could have been the culprit. The photo with the Roller showing it's back shows just how easily they could be overlooked.
