Sickle-winged Chat Emarginata sinuata (591)
(Vlaktespekvreter)
Experiences with species

I first saw this Chat on a dipped Wilson's Phalarope twitch at Barberspan. Etienne and Faansie pointed out the Chat to us. I hadn't seen one for quite a while and was birding/atlassing the Devon area with Bruce - we saw this strange looking Chat. I identified it as an out of range Sickle-winged, however it was the cause of much debate amongst the regional vetting guys. I bumped into Etienne when checking out another out of range bird, Bush Blackcap, in Heidelberg, and discussed the Chat. Tobie and I drove out to the Devon area again before heading home, and were fortunate enough to re-locate the bird. I phoned Etienne, and he and Phil soon located it as well. The ID was confirmed, a rare record for Gauteng (my first record), as well as Mpumalanga - my second record, some 12km away from the first, but over the provincial borderline. This bird is now pitching up in the same area most winters. In May 2012, I found an even further out of range bird, at Mabusa Nature Reserve, a further 100+ kilometers out of its known range.
