Southern Fiscal Lanius collaris (732)
(Fiskaallaksman)
Experiences with species

These Shrikes are common in Gauteng gardens and parks. They have a raucous call, but at times can sing quite a cheerful song. They are called the Butcher Bird, as they often spike their prey on barbed prongs of fences, returning later to eat. In the drier Western part of the country, the Subcorantus sub race has a white eye stripe - during the semi drought of 2007, a lot of desert birds where found far East of their ranges, this and other species such as Lark Like Buntings & Grey backed Sparrowlarks were even found as far East as the Kruger Park.
