Black Skimmer Rynchops niger
(Swart Waterploeer)
Experiences with species

Wow, an expensive lifer, and one confused bird. It pitched up in Cape Town, so work got in the way of twitching, and we dipped. It disappeared on the Friday evening, only to be spotted by our good friend Mark Boorman in Walvis Bay on the Sunday, surely the same bird. Some procrastination and an arm wrestle with a stubborn wallet - a phone call from Mark on the Tuesday "The bird's here!", and three of us zipped off to Walvis, just in time to catch a glimpse of the bird before it did another night-time disappearing act. A click on the map link below will show how far off course this bird was.
