Experiences with species A brilliant find on our 2008 Mozambique trip. All sorts of Heron's were flushing from a channel next to the road to Rio Savane, when a very dark Squacco flushed, I realised it must be a Malagasy Pond-Heron. The other cars were radioed and everyone got fairly decent views of the Heron (through the mist!). Roll on 9 years later and there was a bizarre sighting of one at Mziki Private Reserve in KZN - a bit of wangling and we hopped onto a vehicle driven by none other than Butch James - we almost turned him into a birder that morning! Other names: Madagascar Squacco Heron |
