Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri (366)
(Ringnekparkiet)
Experiences with species

I had seen these birds quite a number of times, flying over the golf course at Huddle Park. Kevin Ravno then showed me the site near Smuts House in Irene, where they nest and roost. The male can be distinguished by its black throat and coloured rings. The female has a green ring. Unfortunately, these birds are descended from escapees, originating in Durban, and now common in Gauteng as well. They have also been introduced in London, where numbers are currently estimated at 6,000.
