Experiences with species
Typically when you see something good, you've left the camera in the car. We were at the lookout at N'wanetsi picnic site in Kruger, there was a scarlet sitting nicely on a stick, so I decided to try and photograph it with my phone, through binoculars. As I lined it up, a bigger, blacker dragonfly landed and chased it off - wow, this is interesting! I managed to get an acceptable shot and identified it as a hooktail. (This was before I got the Tarboton's book). I posted it onto Facebook, and Lappies got all excited, informing me I was one of a select few who had seen this species in South Africa! Just over a year later, we were doing a bird survey at The Outpost, after our drive I spotted another one sitting up on a stick on the rocky hillside. Kruger is THE place to see these.
